Bridges on the Forth

When we tell stories of the world, and all that we have seen

We know it doesn’t matter how incredible it’s been

There’s tropic seas down south and snowy mountains in the north

But no sight can be better than the bridges on the Forth

When I was young and knew it all, I couldn’t wait to leave

I boarded ships with dreams in tow, of all I would achieve

For years I wandered, sailed, and swam, my sails remained unfurled

I anchored nowhere, loved it all, the whole big sprawling world

A few years passed, and then I came to love the views back home

There’s something ‘bout the Scottish skies, the sea, the haar, the gloam,

To leave was harder every time, my heart stayed on the shore

The sprawling world kept calling, but in Leith my spirit soared

Out there I was the very best, the most me I could be

But I kept thinking “Edinburgh is where I want to be”

I let my fear take over, and I turned my back on home

My darling wept, and still I went, to further sail and roam

I’ve been around the world three times, I’ve seen all that I can

The sea’s my blood, she’ll be my grave, she cares not for my plan

I hope to rest my bones back home, the journey seems too far

I’m weary now, my older eyes no longer see the stars

I was a fool, I stayed away too long and now I’ll pay

It’s harder coming home when you got lost along the way

It’s easy to forget that we’re all under the same sky

They’ll love me still, and though it’s far, I know I have to try

I’ll persevere, I’ll make it home, my darling waits for me

She’s standing on the shores and looking out across the sea

I’m sailing home for love and friends, not some utopia

I’ll be at peace once I’m ashore in Caledonia
