We’ve written some original sea shanties and sea songs!*
Why? Well, in part because some of the traditional songs don’t reflect modern life or the vibrant community we are a part of.
We love the traditional songs for the history they represent, and knowing that generations upon generations of people have sung them before us, but we wanted to add to the existing body of music by adding our own perspectives and ideas. It’s mostly a fun way for us to get together and engage with odd little bits of history we come across, or simply try our hand at songwriting!
In late June 2026 we got together at Pianodrome Bruntsfield to record six originals. We invited everyone in our wider community to come along, and were blown away by the dedication shown by those who showed up. We managed to create something quite special, and below are some of the videos. You can also find them all on our YouTube channel!
*no genAI of any kind was used in writing, recording or producing these songs, nor in editing the videos.
We’re not about that, we don’t endorse it, and we never will.
Blow the Monty
Have you ever looked up the (shipwrecked) SS Montgomery? You should!
This song poses the hypothetical question of what might happen if she were to, uh, ignite.
Written & performed by Fox Kelly.
The Real McCoy
A marvellous prohibition shanty about rum-runner William McCoy, this is bound to get stuck in your head for days.
Written & performed by Peter Adams.
Bridges on the Forth
Our love letter to Edinburgh (and Leith in particular), Bridges on the Forth is about being drawn to the big wide world, and how sweet it is to come home to familiar sights.
Written by Julia Koenig & Ash Elliot, performed by Ash Elliot.
Memento Mori
Memento Mori means “remember that you will die”, and the phrase tends to serve as a reminder to enjoy life, in a way. You know, before it ends. This song tells the tale of a fictional crew that find the ending is a little closer than they might like…
Written by Julia Koenig & Ash Elliot, performed by Julia Koenig.
